HEC is a natural polymer material cellulose as raw material, which reacts with sodium hydroxide to form basic cellulose colloid, and then the ethylene oxide and other chemicals are added into the reaction to get etherification. By controlling the production parameters, the Hydroxyethyl cellulose is produced.

It is a white or light yellow powder, non-toxic, tasteless, can be quickly dissolved into hot or cool water, insoluble in general organic solvent, with excellent character of thickening, dispersing, emulsifying, adhesion, stabilizing, water retention and film forming. Also can be used as a protective colloid in some products.

Hydroxyethyl Cellulose(HEC)

DESCRIPTION

Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) is a non-ionic, water-soluble polymer derived from natural cellulose through a series of chemical processes. It serves as a high-efficiency thickening, suspending, and binding agent widely utilized in various industrial applications, particularly in construction and personal care.

In dry-mix mortar and coating systems, HEC acts as a superior water-retention agent, significantly extending the open time and improving the workability of the material. Because of its non-ionic nature, it exhibits excellent compatibility with other functional additives and provides stable viscosity even in high-electrolyte environments.

In the context of architectural coatings and cement-based products, HEC enhances the rheological properties, providing excellent sag resistance and a smooth finish. By maintaining consistent moisture levels during the curing process, it ensures uniform strength development and prevents premature drying, which is essential for achieving a high-quality, durable surface.

Key Performance Attributes:
  • High Water Retention: Prolongs hydration time and improves construction efficiency.

  • Thickening & Rheology Control: Provides ideal consistency and prevents material separation or sedimentation.

  • Salt Tolerance: Remains stable in solutions containing high concentrations of salts.

  • Film-Forming Ability: Creates a clear, flexible film that improves surface integrity.

  • Protective Colloid Action: Enhances the stability of emulsions and pigment dispersions.

PRODUCT PROPERTIES

01  Increases the viscosity and stability of liquids and gels.
02  With the ability to absorb and retain moisture, it is useful in products that require long-term moisture retention.
03  A film can be formed on the surface of the product, which provides a barrier against external factors such as humidity, heat and UV rays.
04  It is compatible with a wide range of other ingredients, which makes it a versatile additive for many industries. It can be used in combination with other polymers and surfactants.

PRODUCT APPLICATIONS

Paints & Coatings: HEC can be used in water-based coatings with excellent emulsification, dispersion speed, stability and water retention, which can help paints and coatings achieve better rheological properties at different shear rates, giving your products smooth leveling, good anti-flaking and anti-slip properties.

Daily Chemicals: HEC is an effective film former, binder, thickener, stabilizer and dispersant in shampoo, hair spray, neutralizer, conditioner and cosmetics. Its thickening and protective colloid properties can be used in liquid detergent and solid detergent industries.

Environmentally Friendly Materials: Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) is naturally degradable and environmentally friendly. It is safe to use with no irritation to human skin, though it’s important to avoid inhalation of dust and direct contact with eyes. Due to its versatility and wide range of applications, HEC holds significant value in both industrial and everyday contexts.

Oil and Gas Exploration: Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) is a critical component used as a viscosity enhancer in drilling fluids, playing a vital role in oil and gas exploration.

Pharmaceuticals: Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC) is used in pharmaceuticals as an adhesive, film coating, and in controlled release formulations.

Food: HEC plays an important role in the food industry as a thickener and stabilizer for various foods. It is commonly used in sauces, dressings, puddings and baked fillings to achieve the desired viscosity and texture.

Paper: HEC can be used as a glazing agent for paper and cardboard and a protective glue for ink. It has the advantage of not being affected by the size of the paper during printing and can print high-quality images. At the same time, due to its low surface permeability and high gloss, it can also reduce costs.
